![]() In the case of Octopath Traveler, the game’s unique visuals are definitely its primary calling card. As a result, I tempered my expectations before playing for this one. After all, I remember being hyped by I Am Setsuna and while the game was solid, it didn’t quite measure up to my lofty expectations. Ultimately, a game must deliver the goods, and my biggest fear with Octopath was that it was going to fall short of what I hoped it to be. Of course, while nostalgia is strong with Octopath just like the Force in the Skywalker family, evoking people's childhoods can only get you so far. I guess you could say I was playing with power. After my TV came on again, my docked Switch was still at the exact same point in my boss fight while my PS4 system was barfing up all sort of errors mid-download. All I can say is, thank goodness for the Switch’s portable mode. When your first reaction after a power surge occurs and the lights go out while fighting H’aanit’s boss is, “Oh my god, is my progress OK?” then you know you’re probably too caught up in the video game you’re playing. ![]() Except instead of the snow outside while playing Final Fantasy VI or the sunny summer weather with my air conditioner on blast as I played Breath of Fire III, there was heavy rain and hail outside while I was playing Octopath Traveler. I mean, just think about that for a moment.Īll of a sudden, I feel like a teenager huddled up with a blanket in my living room once more. Here I am in 2018, playing a pixelated JRPG on a Nintendo system. As someone who was weaned on a steady diet of old-school Final Fantasy, Breath of Fire and Chrono Trigger on the SNES, Octopath brings me back to a time and place that I thought I would never get to experience again.
